Re-Releases On An Old Engine [VIDEO]

The remakes of the first three Mass Effect games have been given a release date, and the trio is coming out with the old engine.

Electronic Arts and BioWare have announced that Mass Effect : This spring, the Legendary Edition will be released, containing over 40 solo DLCs (we won’t list them, but let’s just say that the end of Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut is now in sight). The game features remastered character models and tens of thousands of high-resolution textures, improved shaders and video effects, updated lighting and dynamic shadows, and enhanced volume and depth for a richer visual experience. (However, we draw your attention to the 7th and 8th images – the 8th image has been remastered).

The first Mass Effect will feature significant improvements in worldbuilding (more detail and depth in places like Eden Prime, Ilos and Feros), as well as updated interfaces and user experience, plus updates in combat and exploration through improved targeting, squad control and behavior, Mako controls and cameras. The trio will have character creation options that remain in all three titles, with an improved and expanded selection of hair, makeup and skin tone options. The first two games also feature the female Shepard from Mass Effect 3.

Here are some excerpts from the press release: Three games – one race […] Performance mode options – supports ultra-high frame rates on PCs and offers the choice between the selected quality for higher resolution or the selected image quality for higher FPS performance on consoles. PC Updates – Take advantage of new PC features in all three games with the integrated controller and 21:9 widescreen support, improved user interface navigation and DirectX 11 compatibility. Why only the DX11? We’ll get right on it.

Mac Walters, director of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, explaining to the IGN why they are sticking with Unreal Engine 3 : It soon became clear that the height of the jump would radically change the subject of the series, its sensations and its course. A good example of this would be if you look at the Kismit scripting language, it’s the visual scripting language of Unreal Engine 3, there’s no real copy and paste to make it come into Unreal Engine 4, which means that every moment, every scene… We should do everything from scratch. At that point, we knew we were moving away from the essence and spirit of the trilogy.

I see us trying to continue the magic of the first game. Once you get past that, every question comes up. If this scene is to be changed anyway, why not the dialogue? I never liked that actor, why not use someone else? At some point it’s not what we had originally, and at that point I think you lose the magic of the original, Walters said.

The multiplayer component of Mass Effect 3 will not be included in Mass Effect : Legendary number. Walters explained to PCGamer why: We looked at what needed to be done. What we do with cross-play, what we do with the people who are playing multiplayer right now, how we honor that, how we guide them, how we bridge that gap, and of course those aren’t insurmountable challenges…but if you look at the effort it would take to do that, it was soon reasonable, if not, to improve all of Mass Effect 1.

I think we focused on face-to-face and at some point we had to draw a line. I love the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, like I said, people still play it, but ultimately, I think the product, Mass Effect as a whole: The Legendary Edition better represents the original trilogy because we can focus on the single-player elements, Walters added.

Mass Effect: The legendary edition comes out on the 14th. May for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (Steam, Origin). They are also not ruling out a possible release of the collector.
